FRIENDS: The ultimate sitcom.
Friends, a sitcom created and produced by Marta Kauffman, Kevin Bright and David Krane, aired for the first time on September 22, 1994 and went on during ten successful years, filming it in front of a live audience. The series follows the life of a group of friends living in New York, their everyday struggles and anecdotes. The show starred Courteney Cox as Monica Geller, Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green, Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay, Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing, David Schwimmer as Ross Geller and Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani. The series won many awards and was nominated for 63 Emmy Awards, winning six of them.
During the long-lived sitcom, we can see the evolution that the different characters suffer in their daily lives, maintaining their main traits. Monica Geller, a chef known for her strong personality, her obsessive behavior and competitive nature. Rachel Green, Monica Geller’s best friend from high school, which enters the group of friends as a runaway bride and spoiled girl that has to learn how to survive in the real world. Phoebe Buffay, a peculiar masseuse and singer who had a difficult childhood. Chandler Bing, who no one really knows what his job is about, except that it is related to numbers. He is known for his sarcastic sense of humor, especially if he feels he is out of control. Ross Geller, Monica’s older brother and Rachel’s on and off relationship for the whole series. Ross is a paleontologist who gets married three times as the seasons go by, having a son with his first wife Carol, who ends up being a lesbian. And finally Joey Tribbiani, a struggling actor that has a difficult time choosing between a beautiful woman and a meatball sandwich. The show revolves around the love lives of their different characters, being Ross and Rachel relationship one of the main plots over the seasons, their jobs and, mainly, their friendship.
Friends represented a milestone in American sitcoms. The cast and the terrific writers made this show unforgettable, being the series finale the fourth most watched series finale in history, followed by more than 52 million American viewers, who had met specifically to watch the last episode of their favorite series. The show made a large cultural impact even out of the United States. You can find an imitation of the famous “Central Perk”, the café where the group of friends used to meet everyday, in one of the main streets of Paris. Even after six years since the show ended, TV producers are still trying to find a sitcom which traps the audience as friends did, copying the different gags and situations, and writing about the everyday lives of different groups of friends. With no doubt, “Friends” is one of the bests sitcoms in the history of television.
